Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®)1

Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) is the measurement tool used by the nation's health plans to evaluate their performance in terms of clinical quality and customer service. It is developed and maintained by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). HEDIS is a set of standardized performance measures designed to ensure that purchasers and consumers have the information they need to reliably compare the health care quality.

The measures in HEDIS are related to many major public health issues. These issues include cancer, heart disease, smoking, asthma, and diabetes. HEDIS also includes a standardized survey of consumers' experiences. These surveys are used to rate plan performance. Areas evaluated include customer service, access to care, and claims processing.
