Follow-Up Care for Children Prescribed ADHD Medication (ADD-E)

Monitoring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication is an important part of managing side effects, dosage changes, brand changes, and adherence. This Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®)1 measure examines the following two areas:

  • Initiation: The percentage of members ages 6 – 12 with a prescription dispensed for ADHD medication who had one follow-up visit with a practitioner with prescribing authority during the 30-day initiation phase.
  • Continuation: The percentage of members ages 6 – 12 with a prescription dispensed for ADHD medication who remained on the medication for at least 210 days and who, in addition to the visit in the initiation phase, had at least two follow-up visits with a practitioner within 270 days (9 months) after the initiation phase ended.

Who was measured?
PrimeWest Health Families and Children members ages 6 – 12 as of December 31 of the measurement year who were newly prescribed ADHD medication and had at least three follow-up care visits within a 300-day (10-month) period, one of which was within 30 days of when the first ADHD medication was dispensed. Two rates are reported, initiation and continuation of medication.

Please note that this measure was recently moved to a different form of HEDIS reporting called Electronic Clinical Data Systems (ECDS), and the graph below reflects limited data as a result of this change. The measure name includes “-E” after the abbreviation to indicate it’s an ECDS measure.

What can providers do?
Providers can help increase PrimeWest Health's rates in this area by ensuring members adhere to their medications and by encouraging follow-up visits.
